"AKATE" AROUSE ON COCOA PLANTS: FARMERS CRY FOR HELP


Some cocoa farmers at Jacobu in the Amansie Central district of the Ashanti Region have expressed worry about the current infestation of Cocoa Swollen Shoot and Yellow Mosaic diseases affecting their production due to insufficient agro-chemicals to fight the disease, making them lose a lot of money.

According to them, the diseases kill their cocoa seedlings at the tender stages and efforts to combat it have proven futile.

The Farmers bemoaned that they are suffering under many challenges as farmers in the area but cocoa swollen shoot and cocoa yellow mosaic has given them severe headache through the killing of many cocoa trees at the area causing them to forfeit a lot of money.


The farmers told Angel News reporter Albert Baidoo when he visited the area that, help from the district assembly and the directorate of agriculture has not been forthcoming, leaving them in a state of hopelessness.

They lamented that the dilapidated motorable roads within the district is also denying them the accessibility of market which is causing their other perishable farm produce to rot.

In addition, the farmers hinted that aside this challenge, their other perishable farm produce get spoilt or rot in their farms before they reach market for sales, therefore they have suggested to the government to come and aid them with warehouse that can save their farm produce and help minimize the rate at which their goods got rotten.
